Mother of Fair Love: 60 Years in the Kilkenny Community

October 12, 2026

Our Local History group were delighted to visit Mother of Fair Love School on James Street as the school celebrates its 60th anniversary.

We were very grateful to former CBS student Mr Foley for giving us a fascinating tour and sharing some of the history of the school and its surroundings. Students were particularly interested in seeing a plaque dating from the 1770s and learning about the remnants of the earlier church on the site before St Mary’s Cathedral was built.

A highlight of the visit was a 1986 mural depicting the school and the surrounding area. Students were especially taken by the inclusion of the former CBS school directly across the road, providing a wonderful visual connection between the two schools and the changing landscape of this part of Kilkenny.

It was a pleasure to visit our old neighbour, explore its history and see some of the connections that remain between the two schools. We wish the students, staff and wider Mother of Fair Love community every success as they celebrate 60 years.
