Our TY Local History students visited the Thomas Woodgate Memorial at the Courthouse, where they explored the powerful story of a young 14-year-old Kilkenny man whose life was cut short during the final weeks of World War I.
The monument’s striking design features two life-size figures in Corten steel set on an iron plinth, with three torpedo forms at the base symbolising the German U-boat attack on the RMS Leinster sinking. An accompanying information board outlines Woodgate’s service in the RAF and commemorates the many Irish lives lost in the conflict, including over 800 from Kilkenny and the 567 victims of the Leinster disaster.
It was a pleasure to meet and chat with past Leaving Certificate History student Ciaran Fitzgerald at the site.
The memorial stands as a lasting reminder that behind every statistic is a personal story, one that deserves to be remembered and understood.
