Adopt an Artefact: LC History at James Stephens Barracks- Pics

Many thanks to Barracks Curator Jim O’Keefe and Derek Feehan for hosting our Leaving Certificate History class at James Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny. Students received a fascinating guided tour of the museum collection before taking part in an ‘Adopt an Artefact’ activity, selecting an object that captured their interest for further research and interpretation. Their completed research work will now be prepared for display in the museum alongside the artefacts themselves, and we are very grateful for this valuable partnership with CBC Kilkenny.
Among the artefacts chosen was a Chauchat light machine gun from the First World War, notorious among soldiers for its awkward handling and tendency to jam in the mud of trench warfare because of its unusual open-sided magazine. Having handled it themselves, students could certainly understand its reputation as one of the most notoriously unwieldy machine guns in military history.
Another popular artefact was a Snider-Enfield breech-loading carbine mechanism. This shortened, lighter version of a standard infantry rifle was described by students as the ultimate Victorian military ‘recycling project’. Rather than manufacture entirely new rifles in the 1860s, the British Army converted thousands of older muzzle-loading muskets using the ingenious hinged breech system designed by Jacob Snider. Students were fascinated to learn how many later found a second life outside the army as shortened poacher’s guns, easily concealed beneath a heavy coat.
The class also examined Victorian officers’ mess cutlery bearing the markings of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards. These finely decorated silver-plated pieces reflected the highly formal dining culture of British army officers in the 19th century and reminded students that military history is not only about warfare and weaponry, but also about everyday life, identity and social class.
A memorable day of local history, hands-on learning and research, bringing national and international history to life through Kilkenny’s own military heritage.

Congratulations to all our worthy award recipients on what was a fantastic celebration of all that is good in our school at Awards Night 2026. A special thank you to our guest of honour, and graduate of the class of 2003, Mr Hugh Kelly. Hugh is an Associate Vice President of Eli Lilly and Site Head at Eli Lilly’s state of the art facility in Lebanon, Indiana. We were very grateful to Hugh for taking the time to be with us and to all our our student performers and teachers for their contributions on the night.

Elephant in the room launch- Pics

Last Thursday, our school community officially launched the Elephant in the Room campaign, an important initiative that encourages open conversations around mental health, wellbeing and the challenges that many people may silently carry every day. The campaign reminds us of the importance of speaking up, reaching out and supporting one another, while helping to break down the stigma that can often surround difficult conversations. Through this initiative, we hope to continue building a school community where every student feels seen, heard and supported.
A huge well done and thank you must go to our TY cohort who led this initiative with such care, creativity and dedication. Their hard work and commitment ensured that this campaign was launched in a meaningful and impactful way for our entire school community. We would also like to sincerely thank Ms. Somers along with the 3rd Year and TY Choir, whose beautiful performance on the day added such warmth and reflection to the launch and helped make the occasion so special.
The Elephant in the Room campaign serves as a powerful reminder that no one should ever feel alone in what they are going through and that sometimes the most important thing we can do is start the conversation.

Remembering ‘Ducksie’: TY Students Explore Handball Heritage in The Butts- Pics

For their final TY Local History outing of the school year, our students visited the historic handball alley in The Butts Handball Alley, exploring an important part of Kilkenny’s sporting and working-class heritage.
Built in the 1950s as part of the Waterbarracks sports complex, the alley stands as a reminder of a time when handball was at the heart of community life in The Butts. Students learned how local sports such as handball offered young people an accessible way to compete, socialise and represent their community.
Particular attention was given to the remarkable story of Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh, widely regarded as one of the greatest handball players in Irish history. Born in The Butts, Ducksie went on to win 13 consecutive All-Ireland Softball Singles titles and dozens more national and international honours, helping to place Kilkenny handball on the world stage.
Students were especially interested to learn that August will mark the 10th anniversary of Ducksie’s sad passing in 2016. His legacy continues to live on through local clubs, community memory and the courts where he first developed his extraordinary talent.
It was also lovely to see local families arriving to use the courts after school, a reminder that this facility remains a living part of community life almost 75 years after it was first built.
This visit showed how local sporting spaces can preserve stories of identity, opportunity and pride while continuing to serve new generations today.
