Global Citizenship in Action: Understanding Human Trafficking

Our TY International Relations Club delivered an informative and thought-provoking presentation on human trafficking, engaging students with an issue of both global and local importance. As part of Global Citizenship and Climate Action Week, the presentation linked to wider global issues through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on justice, dignity and the protection of vulnerable people.

Drawing on the ‘Captives’ education programme, developed in partnership with An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice, the presentation highlighted the realities of modern slavery and the importance of awareness and prevention.

Students learned that human trafficking remains a hidden but real issue in Ireland, with victims identified each year, including children. Particular emphasis was placed on recognising warning signs such as individuals appearing controlled, fearful or without access to identification or money. Students were encouraged to respond safely and responsibly by reporting concerns through appropriate channels, including emergency services.

This initiative reflects our commitment to developing informed, responsible young people who are aware of global challenges and their role in promoting human dignity and justice.

Song Writing Workshop

Yesterday, our 3rd Year Music students attended a songwriting workshop led by Luan Parle.

During the session, they collaborated to compose an original song titled “Heroes of Kilkenny”. Students explored the songwriting process in a creative and hands-on way, developing their musical ideas while working together as an ensemble.

It was an engaging and enjoyable experience that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and confidence in music-making.

Exploring Global Citizenship in Kilkenny

Our TY Local History students visited Asian Spices Store on Dean Street, exploring how food, migration, religion and community come together in one local business.

Using student-led question sheets, students discovered that the shop stocks products from a wide range of countries, with particular demand around key festivals such as Ramadan, Diwali, Christmas and Eid al-Fitr.

Students were especially interested in the culinary insights, learning that halal food is prepared according to Islamic guidelines, that basmati rice is a key staple for Indian cuisine, and exploring popular snacks including Lays and Nanna Chips. They also learned how the shop responds to customer demand, often guided by trends and community recommendations, and how a variety of languages, including English, Bangla, Algerian Arabic and Hindi, are used in daily life.

This visit showed how a local shop can tell a much bigger story about Kilkenny’s changing community, global food culture and everyday connections between people. A highlight for many was sampling the Nanna Chips – thoughtful and much appreciated gesture thanks!

Under 15 Irish Ice Hockey

Well done to 1st Year student Ludy Raftice, who represented Ireland in ice hockey at the Sedma Hockey Tournament in Canada over Easter. Ludy was on the Under-15 team, who won gold at the tournament, and Ludy was awarded MVP for the semi-final. Well done to Ludy on such a fantastic achievement.

TY Ag Science Gets the Polytunnel Growing Ready

TY Ag Science class have been getting the polytunnel ready for the new growing season

There has been a great effort in preparing the space, clearing out beds, refreshing the soil, and making sure everything is ready for planting. This preparation work is an important part of ensuring strong growth in the weeks ahead.

It’s great to see teamwork and care going into every stage of the process as the polytunnel gets set for a productive season ahead.

Rice Cup & First Year Captains

Well done to Evan Corcoran & Rowan Bolger who have been named Rice Cup captains for the year. The Rice cup team play Abbey School Tipperary Tuesday in a preliminary quarter final. Also congratulations to Jake Brett who has been named first year captain and James Donlan vice captain. The first year hurlers are in a Leinster semi final which will be played in the coming weeks.
