It was a wonderful opportunity to experience one of Ireland’s biggest agricultural events, explore the sights and enjoy a great day together.

A big thank you to our students Brian Tierney, Donnacha Kenny, Jack Healy and Logan Nicholas who played an important role on the day, helping to prepare the cathedral, welcoming guests and distributing booklets to those attending the ceremony.

Patrick McDonnell, Cian Ormond, Evan Kwong also attended on the day, representing the Ossory Lourdes Pilgrimage volunteers.

All students showed great courtesy, maturity and commitment on such a significant occasion.

We wanted to show our appreciation in person for the many ways Kahns has supported CBC students, staff and families over the years. The students presented flowers and best wishes on behalf of the school community.

For many of our students, Kahns is more than just a bookshop. Some have memories of buying their first novel there, choosing a prize book or visiting with their parents to get their school books. We invited the boys to share some of these memories and it was lovely to hear the personal connections they have with the shop.

We also encouraged the students to browse the shelves, choose a book where possible and, most importantly, take the opportunity to thank the staff themselves.

After 32 years as part of the Kilkenny and CBC community, Kahns has left a lasting mark on generations of our students, staff and families, and we are grateful for the memories, kindness and support over the years.

The lane has a fascinating history hidden in its name. Lousybush comes from the Irish Sceach na Míol, meaning ‘hawthorn of the lice.’ The unusual name preserves a story from the area’s past; records describe Lousybush as a meeting place for beggars on the edge of Kilkenny, linking the lane to the lives of people living on the margins of the city centuries ago.

Students found evidence of a lane in transition: new roads, housing and infrastructure are appearing alongside the older limestone walls, hedgerows and traditional character of the area. Lousybush Lane is planned to become a pedestrian and cycle-only route, retaining its role as an important connection between CBC, the new neighbourhood and the wider city.

Nature provided its own seasonal clues along the way. We found the hawthorn trees laden with red berries, traditionally regarded in Irish folklore as a sign of a cold winter to come. Whether the folklore proves accurate remains to be seen!

The visit provided a fascinating opportunity to see local history unfolding in front of us. From a name rooted in the history of medieval and early modern Kilkenny to a lane now at the heart of a major new development, Lousybush continues to evolve while retaining its place in the landscape and daily life of the city.
